The Cardiff Sinfonietta was formed in 2004 first as a string ensemble comprising of friends from the National Youth Orchestra of Wales but soon expanded to perform the symphonic repertoire. It's membership now comprises of the finest young professional musicians and music students in Wales and the major UK conservatoires.
Since receiving a standing ovation at its debut concert the orchestra has developed a close relationship with The Gate Arts Centre, Cardiff. The Cardiff Sinfonietta is now one of The Gate's resident ensembles and has performed many concerts at he venue including a cycle of Beethoven Symphonies.
In 2011 the orchestra was asked to perform two concerts at the inaugural Cardiff Music festival which was a great success. They returned for the 2012 festival performing with soprano Elin Manahan Thomas.
Other soloists to work with the orchestra include opera singers Julia Lezheneva and Dennis O'neill, pianists Benjamin Grosvenor and Sunwook Kim, the cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and harpist Catrin Finch.
The orchestra has broadcast on BBC and S4C television and in 2013 recorded a charity single with Rhys Meirion, Lucie Jones and Elin Fflur for Wales Air Ambulance.
