The Cardiff Sinfonietta was formed in 2004 first as a string ensemble comprising of friends from the National Youth Orchestra of Wales but soon expanded to perform the symphonic repertoire. It's membership now comprises of the finest young professional musicians and music students in Wales and the major UK conservatoires.

In 2011 the orchestra was asked to perform two concerts at the inaugural Cardiff Music festival which was a great success. They returned for the 2012 festival performing with soprano Elin Manahan Thomas.

The orchestra has broadcast on BBC and S4C television and in 2013 recorded a charity single with Rhys Meirion, Lucie Jones and Elin Fflur for Wales Air Ambulance.
